England Snatch Thriller in Leeds, Go 2-1 Up in the Series

England Clinch Dramatic 3rd Test vs India by 22 Runs | Day 5 Highlights

In a pulsating finish at Lords, England edged out India by 22 runs in the third Test of the five-match series to take a crucial 2-1 lead. Day 5 delivered high drama as Ravindra Jadeja stood tall with an unbeaten 61, but couldn’t take India over the line, with the visitors falling short at 170 all out in pursuit of 193.

Early Jitters:

India Lose Key Wickets in Opening Hour

India resumed Day 5 with hope, but their chase began in the worst possible fashion. Jaiswal, the flamboyant left-hander, fell for a duck in the second over — caught behind by Jamie Smith off Jofra Archer. KL Rahul tried to hold firm and played some crisp strokes during his 39 off 58 balls, but was undone by a Ben Stokes delivery that nipped back and trapped him LBW.

Karun Nair, who showed signs of resistance with a 33-ball 14, was dismissed lbw by Brydon Carse — a huge moment that brought Shubman Gill to the crease. However, Gill’s stay was short-lived. The Indian skipper scored just 6 before being adjudged lbw, again to Carse, and was left in disbelief by the decision. Brydon Carse roared in celebration, a moment of emotional intensity perfectly captured as Gill walked off stunned — a pivotal moment in the collapse.

Middle Order Crumbles:

Stokes & Archer Turn the Screw

As the ball continued to jag around under overcast skies, Avesh Khan became Ben Stokes' second scalp, bowled through the gate for just 1. Rishabh Pant provided a fleeting burst of aggression, striking two boundaries in his 9-run cameo before falling to Archer.

Washington Sundar's stay was painfully brief — a four-ball duck caught and bowled by Archer, reducing India to 82 for 7. The match appeared done and dusted, but Ravindra Jadeja and the lower order had other ideas.

Lone Warrior:

Jadeja's Defiant Fifty

Ravindra Jadeja fought a lone battle, meticulously accumulating runs and expertly shielding the tail. He reached his half-century in gritty fashion, facing over 180 balls and keeping Indian hopes alive with every forward defensive.

Debutant NK Reddy hung around for a 53-ball 13 before edging to Jamie Smith off Chris Woakes. Bumrah showed some fight too, batting for 54 deliveries and scoring 5, but was eventually caught by the substitute fielder off Stokes.

The final nail came when Shoaib Bashir trapped Mohammed Siraj for 4, ending the innings at 170 — just 22 runs short of the target. England erupted in celebration; a relieved but jubilant group knowing how close they came to letting it slip.

Bowling Brilliance:

England’s Attack Fires in Unison

England’s bowlers shared the spoils with incredible discipline and aggression:

  • Jofra Archer was the pick, taking 3/55 in 16 overs, including the vital wickets of Jaiswal, Pant, and Sundar.

  • Ben Stokes led from the front again, bowling 24 overs for figures of 3/48. His wickets of Rahul, Avesh, and Bumrah proved match-defining.

  • Brydon Carse, who dismissed both Nair and Gill lbw, finished with 2/30 from his 16 overs. His joy after removing Gill summed up England’s intensity.

  • Chris Woakes and Shoaib Bashir chipped in with a wicket each to close the innings out.

England’s effort in the field was just as impressive. Jamie Smith claimed three catches behind the stumps and was alert throughout.
