India Stumble in Chase as England Keep the Test
India Stumble in Chase as England Keep the Test Alive – Day 4 Report
The third Test between England and India at Headingley continued to be a gripping rollercoaster, as Day 4 produced yet another twist. England were bowled out for 192 in their second innings, setting India a target of 193 for victory. However, India stumbled in the final session and ended the day at 58 for 4, still needing 135 runs with six wickets in hand and one day to go.
England’s Second Innings: From Promise to Collapse
England began Day 4 with a slender lead and the hope of posting a challenging target. Zak Crawley gave a decent start, scoring 22 off 49 balls with three boundaries before edging to Jaiswal off Nitish Kumar Reddy. Ben Duckett played a fluent 12 off 12 but fell to Siraj. Ollie Pope managed only 4 before being trapped lbw by Siraj again.
Joe Root battled hard, scoring 40 from 96 balls with a single boundary. He was dismissed by Washington Sundar, who bowled a terrific spell. Harry Brook, who hit 23 off just 19 balls, also fell to Akash Deep. Captain Ben Stokes scored a gritty 33 from 96 deliveries before Sundar removed him too.
The rest of the batting lineup offered minimal resistance:
-
Jamie Smith (8), Woakes (10), and Carse (1) were all undone by India’s bowling depth.
-
Jofra Archer remained unbeaten on 5, while Shoaib Bashir was bowled by Sundar for 2.
England were bowled out for 192 in 62.1 overs. The standout performance came from Washington Sundar, who claimed 4 wickets for 22 in 12.1 overs with an economy of just 1.81. He was well supported by Jasprit Bumrah (3/38) and Mohammed Siraj (2/31).
India’s Tricky Chase Begins with Early Trouble
With a target of 193 and plenty of time left in the game, India would have expected a confident start. Instead, England’s pace attack struck early.
Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for a duck in just the second over, caught by Jamie Smith off Jofra Archer. KL Rahul, though, stood firm and played with composure, remaining unbeaten on 33 off 47 deliveries with six boundaries.
Karun Nair contributed 14 but was dismissed lbw by Brydon Carse. Captain Shubman Gill scored 6 before also falling to Carse. The final blow of the day came when Akash Deep edged a ball from Ben Stokes and was bowled for just 1.
At stumps, India were precariously placed at 58/4 in 17.4 overs, still needing 135 runs for a series-defining win.
